Using Obsidian for Writing and Boosting Productivity

**Freelancer Finds Obsidian Ideal Tool for Productivity**

*Despising Meetings, a Freelancer Finds Productivity in Obsidian*

As a freelancer juggling multiple publications, I despise meetings and believe that many managers exist only to waste time. My work is about writing helpful and entertaining content, not about quarterly projections. While this freelance life keeps me out of meetings, there’s still a lot to manage.

## Struggling to Keep Track

I write for five publications, which means I have to manage relationships with five editors. Over the years, I’ve tried several systems to keep track of everything, from spreadsheets to apps like Trello, but none of them quite did the trick.

## Discovering Obsidian

Then I discovered Obsidian a few years ago, and it has become an indispensable tool for me. It’s where I do all of my writing and manage ongoing articles from brainstorming to pitching to publication. Obsidian stores everything as simple text documents in a folder on your computer, allowing me to work fully offline or sync my documents using cloud storage.

## Customizing Obsidian

What I love about Obsidian is the extensive plugin ecosystem, offering over a thousand plugins. For me, the Kanban plugin is crucial for creating a board of cards I can move between tiles. I also use Extract URL, which can grab all text from any website and turn it into a note. The ability to customize Obsidian to work the way I want is what makes it an essential tool for my workflow.

## Using Obsidian for Workflow

My writing process involves brainstorming, pitching, researching, writing, editing, and invoicing, and I use Obsidian for all these steps.

*Brainstorming Ideas*

I compile my ideas in a dedicated Kanban board on Obsidian, where every card links to a dedicated document. I include relevant links, expand on the idea, and note possible angles for the article. When it’s time to take these ideas into the world, I decide which ones to pitch to which editors and arrange them accordingly.

Using Obsidian has allowed me to streamline my workflow and manage my relationships with multiple editors efficiently. It has become my go-to tool for all aspects of my writing process, from brainstorming to publication. Whether I’m working offline or customizing the application to work the way I want, Obsidian has proven to be an indispensable asset for my freelancing career.
