Meet the 28-year-old artist who successfully started a side hustle that brings in up to $267k a year
In 2020, Domonique Brown was putting in long 80-hour workweeks, juggling two marketing jobs, but her true passion was creating art. In April of that year, she decided to start her side hustle, DomoINK, and it has since blossomed into a highly successful art and home decor brand. Not only does DomoINK bring in up to $267k per year, but it has also allowed Brown to collaborate with major brands including Samsung, Disney, Dr. Martens, and Lowe’s.
Brown shared that she currently invests an average of two hours a day into DomoINK, allowing her to effectively balance it with her remote job as an interactive designer. The success of her side hustle has also enabled her to step back from her initial 80-hour work weeks, although the pandemic has contributed to her love of working from home with no commute. With a monthly income of $22,000 in passive online sales across multiple platforms, the majority of her time is dedicated to DomoINK, with the rest of her time focused on her remote job. This is a look at her typical week:
My schedule is very flexible
On an average day, Brown starts her full-time job at 9 a.m., that lasts till 6 p.m. from Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, she only works till 1 p.m. This flexible schedule means that she can start her day at 8 a.m. and use the extra hour to answer emails related to customer orders. With no commute to think about, Brown can easily adapt her day to suit her needs.
I switch up my tasks to avoid burnout
The way Brown structures her week to avoid burnout is truly unique. While Mondays are dedicated to social media content creation, by decorating her home to showcase her products, she uses Tuesdays for more granular tasks like editing footage. On Wednesdays, showcasing her talents through a new art piece and providing behind-the-scenes footage for her followers.
Fridays have become a time for Brown to come up with new product ideas and improve her website. A large part of her time is also spent working on freelance projects and collaborations.
I spend time brainstorming what comes next
Attention to product offerings is paramount for DomoINK, constantly adding new products like puzzles, kitchenware, art prints, and apparel. Her work has been featured in Target’s 2023 Black History Month Collection and will soon be available at Walmart also.
I want my artwork to inspire other creatives
In order to inspire and set the example for other creatives, Brown’s future aspirations include having her art hung in museums. She wants her success to inspire the next generation of young Black creatives.
While the success of DomoINK has brought Brown global recognition and financial stability, her mission to inspire and support diversity and empowerment continues to be her driving force.
